I wear sun hats instead! I used to think there was no such thing as a cute sun hat. But once I started actively looking, I had to stop myself from buying all the cute hats that I found (and keep finding). I limited myself to these two hats. Not only do they keep the sun off my face, they are so nice to have on bad hair days!
I bought this hat at Nordstrom. I love how it rolls up and fits in my bag.
I found this hat at Eddie Bauer. I'm a sucker for navy blue and I love the fringe around the brim.
To protect my boys from the sun, I often dress them in long sleeve shirts and these hats that I found for less than $5 at The Children's Place.
The Environmental Working Group put together this great 2012 Sunscreen Guide with a list of more natural, safer sunscreens if you want to check it out.
Do you have a cute sun hat? Where did you get it?

Your hats are so cute on you! I have my kids wear wide-brimmed sun hats too. We use Burt's Bees natural sunscreen during pool visits and long trips in the sun like the zoo. Lately, in MO its been too hot to spend long outside anyway so we haven't had to worry about sunburns! ;D
ReplyDeleteLove your hats! I just got one this summer for a camping trip and I was amazed at how much cooler I felt while wearing it. I also wore a sunbonnet for a re-enactment last year. I absolutely loved it, but I don't think I could get away with wearing it in normal circumstances. :)
ReplyDeleteSuper cute hats and great advice!! I just blogged about this same thing! :) Thanks so much for linking up again to Simple Steps to Healthy Living!! xoxo
ReplyDeleteI love the hats! It's a great way to protect your face without compromising on what you're willing to expose yourself to in commercial sunscreens. Thankfully, they're back in fashion too!
ReplyDeleteYour hats look great! I find it tricky to pull off a hat with shorter hair, especially when it's stuck in a transitional length. What worked at the beginning of my haircut doesn't work a few weeks later! I love the convenience of throwing one on and not worrying (as much) about sunscreen for my face as the day goes on.
ReplyDeleteHi Kendra, how do you deal with the tops of their ears and the backs of their necks? This is an ongoing research for our family. Thank you for the links. Currently we are using Aveeno Mineral Guard Sensitive Skin Sunscreen with the main ingredient zinc. Thanks again! Going to read your links :)
ReplyDeleteHi Shantalle, I want to buy sun hats for my boys, but I haven't yet. It would help protect their ears and at least part of their neck. I use Badger sunscreen when we need it. It's expensive, but I love the natural ingredients. Their sunscreen stick contains non-nano uncoated zinc oxide, extra virgin olive oil, beeswax, cocoa butter, shea butter, and natural vitamin E. Here's a link about non-nano uncoated zinc oxide. I would love to make some homemade sunscreen, but I'm a little nervous about working with zinc oxide. Thanks for stopping by!

We love hats too! For regular days, we're a hat kind of family, and a little coconut oil on the nose, neck, and shoulders. On really sunny days where we're out all day, like the beach or an outdoor festival or something, we like the California Baby stick. It's a little expensive, but since we don't use it often, we've been managing. I've been wanting to dabble in the world of homemade sunscreen for a while, but haven't gotten to it yet.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for sharing at Tiny Tip Tuesday!
Hi Sarah, Does coconut oil protect from the sun? Awesome, I didn't know that! I've been wanting to make homemade sunscreen too, but I'm nervous about working with the zinc oxide. Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteYou look great in those hats! I found one I'm happy with from good ol' Target. I've liked some from Burlington Coat too. Those hats are cute on your boys. Nathan likes wearing a baseball cap, but he tilts it when he wears it. Sophia goes for her cowgirl hat.
ReplyDeleteI love the one from nordstroms. That is so cute. I have one made by columbia that I just love. This is mine exept mine is pink where this one is blue. http://www.bwca.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=gear.gear_guide&cattype=0&categoryid=109&productid=1233
ReplyDeleteYour hat is so cute! I love the stripes. Thanks for sharing!
DeleteMy friend recently told me that Ross had a lot of sun hats for $10. For that price, I could afford to get a couple more! :)
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! Thank you for posting on Saturday Show and Tell. I hope you'll be back this week.

According to Janice Cox in her book Natural Beauty at Home, sesame oil and avocado oil both have natural sunscreening properties. If you one of those as a daily moisturizer, you are adding a little bit of protection in already!
ReplyDeleteNice! Thanks for the info!
DeleteI also have found that helichrysum and/or sandalwood diluted with coconut oil makes a great sunscreen. All three have been shown to be beneficial.
